Essential considerations when planning a change of job

Often at this time of year we make many promises to ourselves which usually include to be healthier, practice more self-care and of course we see an increase in the number of people who are looking for a new job. It is a given that a lot of thought and consideration will go into this decision and I have outlined below some points which I believe will assist you with planning for same:

Why do you want to change jobs? Be clear about why you want to change jobs – there can be a multitude of reasons that include but are not limited to career progression, remuneration, job satisfaction, broadening of skills / experience and more flexibility in relation to working hours etc.

Where do you see yourself in 12 months, 3 or 5 years time? Ultimately what position would you like to hold and how are you going to get there? The next step in your career may be part of a specific path in order to achieve a certain position in the next couple of years. How is your next position going to help you reach that goal?

What have you achieved to date in your roles? Reflect upon your achievements, what level of responsibility you have held and are there certain areas that you would like to gain exposure on or skills that you wish to develop?

Make a plan: It doesn’t necessarily need to be January when you get your new job but you can certainly kickstart the process.
