Time for a change?

When contemplating a change in your career path it is vital to look at the long term direction of your career. People decide to change career or switch jobs for a variety of reasons, the most common being remuneration, career growth, job satisfaction and new opportunities. There are a number of factors which need to be considered before making a career change.

1. Why do you want to change?

Be clear about why you want to make a career move – ensure you explore and research all of your options and don’t rush the process.

2. Make a Plan:

Make sure you have a plan of where you want to be in five years time and how you will get there. You will have to set a 3 month, 6 month and 12 month plan with specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and timely goals for yourself.

3. What kind of role do you want?

When thinking about a new career, be sure that it is something that you are really interested in. You may be thinking

that you want a complete change however it might be worthwhile thinking of other roles where you can transfer the knowledge and skills that you have built up to date.

4. Are you prepared to retrain?

You will need to consider the implications of a new change of career – you may need to investigate educational

opportunities to enhance your skill set which would pave the way for a change.

5. Remuneration:

This is a crucial factor in your decision process – are you prepared to drop your income level? Find out what your salary prospects will be when you start, as well as your long-term earning potential.
